Lion's Double
Lion's Double
26 May 2010
The first event was a hurdle over the telling distance of 3292m. All horses handled themselves spectacularly over the fences and relished their assignment with the Barry Brook Yesquire giving jockey Emily Taylor her maiden success.
The locals came to the fore in the second with the Rob Wilkinson two year old gelding Trust In Magic proving a popular win as favorite, with Justin Potter in the saddle. This was a deserved win for this consistent horse and a great tonic for the family orientated stable.
The favorite in the third was the way to go again with a narrow victory for Lafayette Lady, giving Claudia Lions the first leg of her riding double. This four-year mare needed all of the 1600m to get the nod from the judge and being by Blevic, should appreciate further ground in the future.
Team Seater always produce some sort of success at their home track and in the fourth event they produced the handy filly Silent Mode first up to score an impressive victory. Being by El Moxie she relished the softer conditions and with Clare Lindop on top careered away for a soft two length win.
The 2206m staying event in the next race saw a slogging finish between the locally trained and last start winner Countess Of Tiba and the Trevor Saltmarsh mare Belle Addiction, with the latter just having enough to grab a win. This gave the sire Blevic a double for the day and further proved the breeds liking for a longer distance.
Kitty Up gave Lions’ her double in the sixth; with a soft 3-length win over his pet distance of 1400m. It was not hard to find this winner after his massive performance over this same distance when last at the Murray Bridge track.
The seventh event was the feature of the day, a 1000m sprint which on paper looked to be a very fast run event. Local trained mare Miss Imperial was sent out a warm and popular favorite and to be fair to the winner, looked a good thing beat, but the spoils went to the Greg Lesnikowski grey Uli Urs Utz, scoring in a blanket finish right down the outside rail from local pair Deal Broker and Chunky Custard.
The punters once again pinned their hopes on a local in the last with Shimano Miss backed into favoritism but it was not to be a happy finish for favorite punters with the Finnis trainer John Hyam producing Zip Royal first up to have a long neck margin to spare at the end of 1200m.
A small crowd would have been a little disappointing for the club, with the heavy dark clouds in the morning possibly scaring off some punters. It is 19 days until the clubs next race day on the Queens Birthday public holiday Monday that should be a great day out for those people enjoying a day off.
